On the alien, sunless planet they call Eden, the 532 members of the Family shelter beneath the light and warmth of the Forest’s lantern trees. Beyond the Forest lie the mountains of the Snowy Dark and a cold so bitter and a night so profound that no man has ever crossed it.
The Oldest among the Family recount legends of a world where light came from the sky, where men and women made boats that could cross the stars. These ships brought us here, the Oldest say—and the Family must only wait for the travelers to return. But young John Redlantern will break the laws of Eden, shatter the Family and change history. He will abandon the old ways, venture into the Dark…and discover the truth about their world. Already remarkably acclaimed in the UK, Dark Eden is science fiction as literature; part parable, part powerful coming-of-age story, set in a truly original alien world of dark, sinister beauty--rendered in prose that is at once strikingly simple and stunningly inventive.
Review:
I received this book from BloggingForBooks for free in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
The world building in Dark Eden is quite fascinating. The premise is unlike anything I've ever read before. Since the world of Dark Eden is so complex and intricate, I found myself confused a lot of the time while I was reading. Dark Eden is an award winning sci-fi. I usually don't read "hardcore sci-fi", so I wouldn't know what consists an award winning sic-fi novel. That being said, I kind of don't know where my opinion lies.... I ended up not being able to finish the book because of how the book was completely foreign to me and out of my comfort zone.
My rating system: (I do use half stars.)
5 - I do not use the 5 star. Not because a book might not be worthy, but because a book is never perfect.
4 - I loved it! There weren't too many flaws, and I had no trouble getting through it. (A 4 star rating is the highest rating I've ever given a book.)
3 - I enjoyed the book, but there we're flaws that made me enjoy it less.
2 - I finished the book, but there were too many flaws for me to enjoy it.
1 - I could not finish the book, and I probably did not finish it....
