Time for shadowhunter news!
Attention all shadowhunters! January 14, 2014 was a very emotional day for shadowhunters (half angel, half human demon slayers). After all, the wait was finally over for the gorgeous cover of the last installment of The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare — City of Heavenly Fire.

             About the series:
A thousand years ago, the Angel Raziel mixed his blood with the blood of men and created the race of the Nephilim. Human-angel hybrids, they walk among us, unseen but ever-present, our invisible protectors. They call themselves Shadowhunters. The Shadowhunters obey the laws set down in the Gray Book, given to them by the angel: their mandate is to protect our world from the interdimensional parasites they call demons, who travel from world to world, razing and destroying everything in their path. Theirs is also the task of keeping the peace among the warring Downworlders: the human-demon crossbreeds we know as warlocks, vampires, werewolves, and faeries.
In their duties they are aided by the mysterious Silent Brothers. Their lips and eyes sewn shut, the Silent Brothers rule over the City of Bones, the necropolis below the streets of Manhattan that holds the dead bodies of slain Shadowhunters. The Silent Brothers keep the archival records of ever Shadowhunter ever born.
They also watch over the Mortal Instruments, the three divine objects the Angel Raziel gave to his children. One is a sword. One is a mirror. And the last is a cup. For a thousand years, the Nephilim have protected the Mortal Instruments. But that was before the Uprising, the civil war that almost tore the Shadowhunters’ secret world apart. Though Valentine Morgenstern, the Shadowhunter who started the war, is long dead, the wounds it left behind have never healed. Fifteen years have passed since the Uprising. It’s August in New York; the streets blistering with heat. Rumors run rampant through Downworld that Valentine is back, at the head of an army of Forsaken warriors. And the Mortal Cup has gone missing…
The release of the cover caused quite a stir among all the readers of the series; known as a “fandom”. Many questions were asked about “Who is the man standing behind her?” the young man standing behind her is Jonathan Morgenstern. Clary’s older brother.  "Why is she wearing white?" White is the color of mourning in the “shadow world”. Cassandra has clearly stated on her twitter that Clary does where white at some point in the book.

Along with the questions about the cover, there were also emotions that went along with it as well. Fans of the series were so excited to see all of the characters in the series on the cover. Yet there are only two of the main characters there. Fans might not know this, but the cover opens up, and inside is where the rest of the characters are portrayed.

Do you like the cover? Which The Mortal Instruments cover do you like best? Take the poll below and let us know!

Vampire Academy will now be in theaters one week earlier before! Originally the movie’s release date was set to February 14, 2014 and now is February 7, 2014.  This is not the first time the movie has faced big changes. A few months ago, the title of the movie was changed from Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters to Vampire Academy. No one knows exactly why.
It might have been because the film might not produce enough revenue to make a second movie. Or, it could have been because the production companies wanted the movie to be more similar to the book Vampire Academy. Vampire Academy does not have a second title.
So much has happened one month before the movie’s release! So many stills from the movie have been released! It’s not even funny! Over 50 of them have been released by different production companies.
The
Vampire Academy movie companion also came out. It’s a very affordable price and contains tons of stills and behind the scenes pictures! We highly recommend that you check it out!

For the first time Mark Waters (director) has talked in detail about the filming of Vampire Academy! He is also the director of the film Mean Girls

Mark Waters: A large part of directing is about taking the mental images that form when you read a piece of material, and then finding or building something in the real world that matches that vision. Certainly when I read "Vampire Academy" I had a very distinct picture in my brain of Richelle Mead's description of St. Vladimir’s, and I knew our first step in making the movie would be finding the real world place that could be our school.
We searched all around the world, first checking out the older prep schools and colleges in New England, then searching around Czechoslovakia, seeing many old estates and castles. Then we drove from Edinburgh, Scotland, down through the whole of the U.K. And just about an hour southwest of London, we finally arrived at the Charterhouse School. As soon as I saw the front courtyard I had that exhilarating feeling of everything locking into place. This school was not just my mental image of St. Vladimir's… it was better.
Luckily enough the school agreed to let us shoot there during their vacation breaks, and the look and feel of the school really defined the whole look and feeling of the film. The juxtaposition of the 1800's architecture with modern technology and modern teenagers is something that I think gives our movie a real distinctiveness.

Even though we shot our movie in England, St. Vladimir’s is of course in the middle of Montana, so we did a lot of things to make it seem like we were there. Putting up our own Montana welcome sign was easy. Using visual fix to add mountains to the background of almost all of our exterior shots – that was hard. Since we are dealing with vampires after all, a great deal of our movie is set at night or at magic hour, either dusk or dawn, so there was no direct sun in the sky. As you can see from this raking angle of the front of the school, the architecture has a character that defines the tone of the movie. Awe-inspiring, comfortable in its old world familiarity, but also slightly imposing and scary.

New Vampire Academy clips have surfaced! Check them out below! Tell us what you think about them in the comments!

This month, Fandom Monthly Magazine had the oppurtunity to interview the author of Almost Demon AJ Salem! She is such a great writer and we really recommend that you try reading her books!
AJ Salem was born in Haifa, Israel to parents who immigrated from the other side of Dracula's mountain. She was just a toddler when her family picked up and made the big move to New York where necessity had her learning English from Sesame Street and weekly trips to the public library where her mother encouraged her to stock up on books.
AJ graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology with a BFA in Illustration and has been working as a Graphic Designer. In 2009, after completing her first NaNoWriMo, she decided to make a career change but credits her previous education and experience to preparing her for becoming a novelist.
When she isn’t writing or reading, AJ is rearing her four children, crocheting and watching too much British Television.
Almost Demon, her first novel, follows 17-year old Gemma Pope, a reluctant demon summoner, as she battles the dark shadows suddenly threatening her hometown of Harrisport while coming to terms with her role in the death of her twin brother and two friends.

How did you know that writing was a career that you wanted to pursue? When?
It seems very cliched but I really did wake up one morning lifted my head from the pillow and said; “Wait a minute. I think I really want to be a writer.” I had been participating in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) for a few years and would get grumpy when it wasn’t November. Then it hit my in the face - the idea that I could be this happy all year long by remaining consistent and continuing my writing every month - it was a big moment for me. That was three years ago. I had been writing in one way or another all my life but participating in NaNoWriMo made me realize it was my passion and it reminded me of all the books I used to make as a kid.

Do you ever experience writer’s block?
That’s not a term I like to use because to me it places blame for being unproductive on something that is outside myself and beyond my control. It’s very tempting when getting hung up on a plot hole to wait for inspiration to hit but that could take weeks and in the end it just exacerbates the problem. Looking back and realizing how much time got wasted is an awful feeling that can spiral. Does that mean I’m always able to write? No. But since I outline every scene chapter by chapter, if I’m not able to write consistently it means that I need to analyze what is it about the story that is stopping me. I then rework the outline a bit until I’m happy and can move on. And if that doesn't work I push through it and rework it on the next draft. Either way I’m always somehow working on my writing and making sure I put in my time every day.

What are you currently reading?
Come Alive by: Karina Halle and Throne of Glass by: Sarah J. Maas. Just finished Catching Jordan by Miranda Kenneally.

What are some of the things that you like to do with your free time?
I love watching TV - right now I’m obsessed with The Original and Continuum. But reading is always my number one hobby. Exercising also keeps my brain clear and when I need something repetitive to do I crochet or needlepoint.

What are you currently writing?
I’m writing the sequel to Almost Demon which is tentatively titled Born Human. And I also started working on a middle-grade fantasy book that I'm thinking of putting up on Wattpad.

What exactly is your editing process?
I write most of my story long hand - then when I’m typing up the sections I do a quick form of editing - adding dialogue or descriptions that I feel are missing. Then, I have to print out the draft and make all my changes in colored pen. For some reason I can spot things better this way. After I type up the changes and I print it out again. When I’m finally done and can't look at it anymore it goes out to an editor.

Do you have any advice for new writers?
It really all boils down to getting your butt in the chair and not quitting. Every step of the process can become a hurdle. Having ideas, not having ideas, not knowing where to start, finishing, editing, formatting, marketing - it can all get overwhelming. Just tackle each part, one at a time, and don't let setbacks discourage you. And whatever you do - Don't Quit. You may be inches from goal.

Thank you so much to AJ for time, your stories, and your advice! It means the world to us!

We also had a chance to interview J.D. Netto! He is the author of the book The Whispers of the Fallen. J.D. Netto is such a talented writer and we highly recommend that you try reading some of his books! His new book Rebellion will be out soon.
J.D.Netto (Jorge de Oliveira Netto) is Brazilian-born. Raised in Framingham, MA, J.D.Netto always had an eye for epic fantasy and story-telling. At an early age, he had the habit of locking himself in his room, turning on any soundtrack he could find, and there he would write for hours.
During his senior year in High School, J.D.Netto had an idea that changed his life, 'What if Lucifer had a Diary? What if the Diary was a secret? What if the secret was a reality?' These simple questions led him to write for six consecutive years, researching, perfecting his craft, and creating the world of Elysium. All the promotional visuals of the novel, including the cover, were designed by J.D.Netto, proving that he is not only a writer, but an innovative visual designer.

What inspired you to write?
First I would like to thank Fandom Monthly Magazine for this opportunity.
When it comes to my writing, many things inspire me.
Sometimes the way people behave around me, a song that is played, or even the rain outside gives me ideas to write. We can find inspiration in the most ordinary things and turn them into something remarkable.

While you were growing up, were you good at English?
I lived in Brazil until the age of eleven. Ever since I can remember, the English language has always fascinated me.
I used to take private English classes until I moved to the U.S. It took me about a year and half to fully master the language.

Do you have a specific writing style?
I am very descriptive. Before I was ever an author, I was an artist. I taught myself how to draw, and that particular skill helps me in my writing. I see the words as my "drawing kit" and use them to the best of my ability to describe what I see in my mind.

What book (s) has influenced your life the most?
I am a Tolkien fan. His works have always had a huge influence on me since I was young. There is also a book called The Shack by William Paul Young. It is a life-changing story that I recommend everyone to read.

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?
The day I discovered books could be written, I felt like writing one. My first books were about dinosaurs and knights. After the book was completed, I would sketch out all the scenes into a comic book. I started to take writing seriously at the age of 17.

What exactly is your editing process?
I write down whatever comes to mind first. After everything is done, I go back and re-read. During that process, I elaborate on the scenes and chapters to their full potential. Later on, I sent my manuscript to my editor to do the final changes.

Are there any authors that inspire the stories that you write?
I would not say they inspire the stories I write, but they inspire me in my career. J.K.Rowling's story is a great inspiration to me. One of the most amazing series in the world was turned down fifteen times before it was ever published! That is very encouraging to any author. C.S.Lewis is one of my role models as well. He was one of the greatest thinkers of the twentieth century and became a prominent voice during his time.

What are you currently reading?
Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins.

Is there anything in your book The Whispers of the Fallen that comes from your own life?
Most definitely. My characters are inspired by my family and friends. Often times, while working on a particular scene, I think how my friends would react or behave. There are moments in my novels that are allegories to some of my past experiences.

Do you ever experience writer's block?
Yes, I do. Whenever that happens, I need to walk away from my desk, get a latte, and go some place else. Sometimes all the mind needs is a new place to get inspired.
